Haircare That Cares
At Tangle Teezer, we’ve always been a brand that cares. We care about our customers, we care about hair and we care how we treat the planet we all live on. Our mission is to reinvent the way all hair is cared for, a stroke of genius at a time. And that includes playing our part in building a sustainable future.
Making genius hair care in the most sustainable way we can is important to us, reducing our carbon footprint and the amount of waste we produce, so we can keep being brilliant – for you, for our planet and for the future. We don’t have all the answers right now – who does? – but we’re all about making
a positive difference and forever evolving.
First, Let’s Talk About Plastic
Plastic. It’s truly an amazing material. Strong, resilient, waterproof, flexible.
It can be used in thousands of useful ways, from life-saving medical equipment to everyday products you can use day in, day out for many
years. Across the globe, we all use plastic products every day.
But when plastic makes its way into the environment, there aren’t
effective waste and recycling systems in place and we don’t use or treat plastic as the valuable material that it is, it can have a negative effect.
As consumers, we can all look a bit harder at what plastic we buy and
use, how often we use it and how we dispose of it. And as a brand, we
must make careful decisions about what we produce, how we do it and
how our products are disposed of, so they don’t end up as waste or in landfill.
So what are we doing about plastic and our impact on the planet?
Our Brushes
Our brushes are currently made
from plastic. Tough, durable, recyclable, plastic that will last for many years. Our love of hair has driven us to design products differently, to perform brilliantly, including the two-tiered teeth technology that makes Tangle Teezer brushes unique and high-performing, but also really long-lasting. So please cherish and care for your brushes; that plastic is valuable.
Recycling
When your Tangle Teezer is well-loved and
it’s time to replace it, the old ones can easily
be recycled through our recycling programme [LINK]. When you send your brushes back to
us (any plastic hairbrushes, in fact, not just
a Tangle Teezer), we make sure they’re fully recycled. At the moment, we send about 500 brushes to recycling each year.
We’re in the early stage of our recycling journey, and want to increase this to 10,000 a year by 2030, so keep sending us back your old brushes… we care about keeping the plastic in the system so it continues to be reused!
A new type of plastic is coming
Most plastics are made from fossil fuels, which we know contributes to climate change. But there are more and more plant-based alternatives being developed, which come from natural, renewable sources. It’s always been our mission to reinvent the way all hair is cared for, a stroke of genius at a time and we’re very excited to announce that another genius tool is coming from Tangle Teezer soon.
Revolutionary, expect faster detangling with less hair breakage
from a brush made with innovative, sustainable materials.
The Plant Brush, made from innovative, plant-based materials, for faster detangling with
less hair breakage is the next step in our sustainable journey - look out for the launch date!
What about our packaging?
Up until now, Tangle Teezer products are sold
in plastic packaging. While it’s made from recycled plastic and fully recyclable, we’ve thought hard about what plastic we do and don’t need to use and have decided to switch all our packaging to cardboard.
With all the best intentions, not all plastic packaging gets recycled - only 14% of all plastic packaging is collected for recycling after use (source: Ellen Macarthur Foundation). One way we can contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet is to get rid of unnecessary plastic packaging altogether and that’s exactly
what we’re doing by switching to cardboard.
Cardboard is made from renewable sources,
it’s easily recycled, and it breaks down naturally in the environment. The cardboard we use for our new packaging is sustainably-sourced, fully recyclable, and certified by the FSC and the CPI.
You will start to see the new packaging introduced in 2023 and by 2025, we will have removed all plastic packaging. It’s one step
on our journey to a more sustainable future.
Producing waste
Alongside our brush recycling programme and the changes
to our packaging, we have adopted innovative practices in our factories to make sure that when making Tangle Teezer brushes, we recycle the majority of any waste that’s generated along the way – plastic or paper, big or small.
Emissions and energy
We’ve carried out detailed surveys
for our workplace in London. We have
an energy rating of B and compare favourably to similar properties. That said
we are committed to reducing our energy and emissions switching to renewable energy sources wherever possible.
Where we work with outside-owned facilities,
we only work with those that run highly energy efficient processes and we review these annually.
Reporting on how we’re doing
We’ll report on our progress each January so you can see where we are in relation to our commitments. We know we’re at the beginning
of our sustainability journey and we’re learning all the time, making improvements along the way.
All our updates will be available
on our website.
